Weekend Update – Memorial Day 2023

Happy Memorial Day!
Happy Memorial Day!

This weekend, and especially Monday, we honor and mourn those who perished while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

On Monday, Memorial Day itself, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and all other transit agencies will run on a Sunday/Holiday schedule.

Given the long weekend, there will be plenty of activities going on, particularly in San Jose. Read more about these events – and travel advisories – below.

No VTA Light Rail Service In Campbell Until May 9

We’ve learned that, until May 9, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will run shuttle buses instead of light rail between the Winchester and Bascom stations in both directions. This is to allow for station platform (re)construction work at the Hamilton light rail station. Read here for more details.

Per VTA Customer Service, the shuttle buses will run on the same schedule light rail uses now. (Note expected departure and arrival times only list the Winchester and Bascom stations. Schedule courtesy of VTA.) As the shuttle buses must navigate traffic on city streets, add up to 15 minutes’ more travel time in either direction between Winchester and Bascom stations.

Call VTA at (408)321-2300 then press 1 for Customer Service, or email VTA Customer Service, for any questions regarding this or other bus/light rail services.

September VTA Meeting Summary…With a Feeling

Last month, I wanted to experiment with providing a brief summary of a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Board Of Directors meeting.  Your feedback demanded more information be provided for such summaries.  So, in the future, more detail will be provided for such summaries.

That said, the September 7 VTA Board Of Directors Meeting and follow-up workshops revealed a potential conflict of interest in a formed sales tax measure watchdog group. They also confirmed routing for two bus lines, once the BART extension to Milpitas and Berryessa comes online.  Finally, conflict was revealed between VTA and BART over how a tunnel for BART in downtown San Jose should be built.

Detailed information on all of this (in chronological order) is below.

Palo Alto Transit Center Closed Until Jan. 27

Due to city sewer replacement work, the Palo Alto Transit Center will be closed for bus service until January 27.  As a result, SamTrans and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) bus riders must board buses on El Camino Real and Quarry, near Stanford Shopping Center.  Here is the SamTrans bus boarding plan and the VTA bus boarding plan during the work.  Staff from both agencies are expected to be on hand to assist those who need transfers between these buses and Caltrain.  Meanwhile, Caltrain will still serve the Transit Center.
